In the 1950s, Paul Newman had everything a rising star was supposed to want: a beautiful wife, three young children, and a career on the verge of exploding. Then he met Joanne Woodward on a film set, and everything he thought he wanted quietly fell apart.
What followed was one of the biggest scandals of the era. What no one predicted was that it would lead to one of the most enduring marriages in Hollywood history.
A Chemistry Too Strong to Ignore
Newman and Woodward first worked together on the 1954 play Picnic, and again on the 1958 film The Long, Hot Summer. Their on-screen chemistry translated instantly to real life, but at the time, Newman was still married to his first wife, Jackie Witte, with whom he had three children.
The affair became one of the industry’s worst-kept secrets. Fan magazines speculated openly, and colleagues on set noticed the two could barely take their eyes off each other between takes.
Leaving It All Behind
In 1958, Newman made the decision that would define the rest of his life. He divorced Witte and married Woodward the same year. The scandal cost him some public goodwill in the short term, with critics accusing him of abandoning his young family for a co-star.
Newman rarely discussed the details publicly, but he later admitted the decision had not been easy, and that he carried guilt over the pain it caused his first family for years afterward.
A Marriage Hollywood Never Expected to Last
Given how their relationship began, few predicted it would survive long. Instead, Newman and Woodward went on to build one of the most stable and admired marriages in Hollywood history, working together on more than a dozen films and raising three daughters together.
When asked once about the secret to a lasting marriage in an industry full of temptation, Newman famously joked that he had a steak at home, so why would he go out for a hamburger, a line that became one of the most quoted in Hollywood folklore.
Fifty Years, Until the End
The couple remained together for fifty years, until Newman’s death in 2008. Woodward stayed by his side through his final illness, and friends said the devotion between them never wavered, even decades after the scandal that first brought them together had long been forgotten by the public.
What began as one of Hollywood’s most talked-about affairs became, in the end, proof that some scandals are simply love stories that started at the wrong time.
