James Dean loved his new Porsche 550 Spyder so much that he gave it a nickname before he had even driven it a hundred miles. He called it Little Bastard. Days later, the car he was so proud of became the site of his death.
The story of that car did not end with Dean’s fatal crash. What happened to it afterward became almost as strange as the tragedy itself.
A New Obsession With Speed
By 1955, Dean had developed a genuine passion for competitive auto racing, a hobby he pursued with the same intensity he brought to acting. He had already competed in several amateur races, developing a reputation as a skilled, fearless driver.
In September of that year, he purchased a Porsche 550 Spyder, a lightweight, purpose-built racing car, intending to compete in an upcoming race in Salinas, California.
A Nickname That Became Eerily Prophetic
Dean had the words Little Bastard painted on the back of the car, a lighthearted nickname reportedly inspired by a joke among friends. He drove it to the race himself rather than have it trailered, wanting to break the engine in along the way.
On September 30, 1955, while driving the car on Route 466 near Cholame, Dean collided with another vehicle at an intersection. He was killed almost instantly.
A Wreck Surrounded by Strange Stories
In the years following the crash, the wrecked remains of the car became the subject of numerous urban legends, with mechanics and subsequent owners reportedly linking it to a string of unrelated accidents and misfortunes. Whether coincidence or embellishment, the stories helped cement the car’s eerie reputation.
The wreck was eventually put on display as a safety warning at car shows before mysteriously disappearing while being transported by rail in 1960, and it has never been recovered.
A Legend That Outlived the Wreckage
Decades later, the mystery of Little Bastard’s disappearance remains unsolved, adding one more layer to the legend surrounding Dean’s short life and sudden death.
A car meant to be a symbol of Dean’s love for speed and freedom instead became one of the most infamous vehicles in automotive history, forever tied to the tragedy that ended his life at just twenty-four.
