Doris Day never planned on becoming a singer. As a teenager, her only ambition was to dance professionally. A single car accident at fifteen years old shattered that dream, and unexpectedly opened the door to the career that would define the rest of her life.
It remains one of the more unlikely origin stories in Hollywood history.
A Dream Built Around Dance
Born Doris Kappelhoff in Cincinnati, Ohio, young Doris trained seriously in dance from childhood, with hopes of eventually performing professionally, potentially even in Hollywood. She and a dance partner had begun making real progress toward that goal by her mid-teens.
In 1937, a train struck the car she was riding in at a railroad crossing, leaving her with a severely broken leg that required a lengthy recovery and ended any realistic hope of a professional dancing career.
Singing as an Unexpected Consolation
During her long recovery, largely confined to her home, Day began singing along to the radio to pass the time. Her mother, noticing her natural talent, arranged for her to take voice lessons, a pursuit that had never previously been part of her plans.
What began as a way to occupy herself during a painful recovery revealed a genuine musical talent that would soon eclipse her earlier dreams of dance entirely.
From Local Singer to National Star
By her late teens, Day was singing professionally with local bands, eventually joining bandleader Les Brown’s orchestra, where her recording of Sentimental Journey became a massive nationwide hit in 1945.
That success opened the door to Hollywood, where she transitioned into film in the late 1940s, eventually becoming one of the top box office draws of the 1950s and 1960s.
A Career Born From Tragedy
Day rarely dwelled publicly on the accident that redirected her life, though she occasionally reflected on how differently things might have turned out had the injury never happened.
What began as a devastating setback to a teenage dancer’s dream became, instead, the accidental beginning of one of the most successful entertainment careers of the twentieth century.
