Wood was spending the weekend on her yacht, Splendour, with her husband Robert Wagner, actor Christopher Walken, and the boat’s captain. Accounts of the evening describe drinking and a tense argument aboard the boat before Wood was discovered missing sometime after midnight.
Her body was recovered by search teams the following morning, not far from the boat, wearing a nightgown, socks, and a down jacket, with a small inflatable dinghy also found nearby.
An Investigation Full of Unanswered Questions
The initial investigation ruled her death an accidental drowning, though inconsistencies in witness accounts and unexplained bruising on her body left lingering doubts among investigators and the public alike over the following decades.
The boat’s captain later came forward with a revised account of the night that raised further questions, prompting authorities to formally reopen the case in 2011, thirty years after her death.
A Death Certificate Revised Decades Later
In 2013, officials amended Wood’s official cause of death from accidental drowning to drowning and other undetermined factors, acknowledging that the full circumstances of her death could not be conclusively established.
Robert Wagner has never been formally named a suspect but was identified by investigators as a person of interest in the renewed investigation, a designation he has consistently disputed.
