Nancy Hawks urged her husband to consider the young model for film roles, leading to a screen test and, ultimately, a contract with Warner Bros. Studios renamed her Lauren Bacall shortly afterward.
An Immediate Star-Making Debut
Her very first film, To Have and Have Not in 1944, cast her opposite Humphrey Bogart, and her smoky, self-assured screen presence made an immediate impression on critics and audiences alike, an extraordinary outcome for a performer with zero prior acting experience.
The film also sparked her real-life romance with Bogart, whom she married the following year, cementing her transition from teenage model to Hollywood leading lady within the span of just a few years.
A Career That Outlasted the Golden Age
Bacall continued working steadily long after the classic Hollywood studio era ended, transitioning successfully into Broadway theater, where she won two Tony Awards, and continuing to appear in films well into the 2000s.
She remained one of the last living connections to the golden age of Hollywood until her death in 2014, a career that traced all the way back to a single magazine cover noticed by exactly the right person.
